Daniel Lumonya, PhD is the Chief Quality Assurance Officer of the Karamoja Peace and Technology University (KAPATU) Project. He has extensive experience in higher education, with a career that includes roles in the United States and various African countries.

Dr. Lumonya served as the Regional Dean for the School for International Training (SIT) Africa Portfolio from August 2015 to December 2019 and as Associate Dean from August 2022 to December 2023. In these positions, he supervised teams at multiple learning centres and was instrumental in developing new centres in several international locations.

Dr. Lumonya’s educational background includes a Ph.D. in Development Sociology from Cornell University, where he completed his dissertation in 2019. He also holds a Master of Science in Development Sociology from Cornell University (2011), a Master of Arts in Social Sector Planning and Management from Makerere University (2000), and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and Social Administration from Makerere University (1992). He has a certificate in Research Methodology and Project Formulation from Makerere Institute of Social Research and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1995).

His teaching and research interests focus on agrarian transformation and local community development. Dr. Lumonya has worked in various African countries, including Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania, and has held several academic positions, including Head of Department and Senior Lecturer at Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) and Senior Research Associate at the Africa Leadership Institute (AFLI).

In his role as the Kenya Country Director for SIT in 2024, Dr. Lumonya focused on reviving human resources, aligning resources and logistics, and strengthening local partnerships. He is also the founder and director of Washarika, which is developing a longitudinal household data set on poverty dynamics in Uganda and has initiated projects aimed at improving nutrition among young children.

Dr. Lumonya’s professional experience includes various roles in international education, development studies, and research. He has collaborated with organisations such as UNICEF and has been involved in numerous community engagement initiatives in Uganda. His expertise encompasses cross-cultural competency training and human resource management in educational contexts.
