Savino Biryomumaisho is an Associate Professor of Clinical Veterinary Medicine and Academic Registrar of the Karamoja Peace and Technology University (KAPATU) Project. He holds a PhD in Veterinary Medicine, a Master of Science in Veterinary Clinical Pathology, a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, Diploma in Education and several certificates in animal health and production-related disciplines, among other qualifications.
At Makerere University, he has accumulated considerable academic administrative experience. He is the Head, Department of Veterinary Medicine and Clinical Studies (PCS). Since 2019, he has represented the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Resources (SVAR) in Makerere University Senate. He serves on the Ceremonies Committee of Senate. He is a member of the College Academic Board, Member of the College Finance Committee and College Examinations Malpractices and Appeals Committee. He is the departmental representative to the SVAR Administrative Board.
Earlier, he served as Senior Scientist, Animal Health (2011-2016) at Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) / Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) in Kigali, Rwanda. Under a Memorandum of Understanding with the then School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Resources, He taught clinical veterinary medicine at Umutara Polytechnic, currently the University of Rwanda, Nyagatare Campus (2009-2010). He has published a wide range of topics in the discipline of animal health. He has further undertaken a number of short animal health and production skill-based trainings in different countries that include Israel, Kenya, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Belgium, China and the United States, among others, as well as participated in a number of research initiatives.
He is an all-round professional in terms of having a 32-year career that has seen him serve as an undergraduate and graduate levels students’ trainer at Makerere University since 1994. He also has experience in institutional capacity building and mentorship for animal health scientists and implementation of community development programs through servicing livestock development initiatives. He is also a member of the SVAR Institutional Animal Care and Use in Research Committee/Institutional Review Board (SVAR-IACUC/IRB). He was the team leader who revised the Master of Veterinary Medicine (MVM) at CoVAB; they spearheaded the transformation of the program from single track to a four-track / specialty program. In Senate, he serves on the Ceremonies Committee.
He is actively engaged in community service; he has been a member of the Uganda Veterinary Council (UVC) since October 2025. UVC is the regulator of veterinary medicine and veterinary paraprofessional practice and training in Uganda. He is also a Member of the Governing Council of the University of St. Joseph Mbarara (September 2024-date). He is the Chairman of St. Jude Catholic Community of the Archdiocese of Mbarara Development Association (AMDA) in Kampala as well as Chairman of Nyabuhikye Parish catholics living in Kampala and surrounding areas (2024 – date).
